What is Ford EcoBoost®?

Ford EcoBoost® is the brand’s line of powerful, turbocharged, direct-injection engines. The EcoBoost® engines are designed to deliver a balance of fuel efficiency, horsepower, and torque that takes the Ford driving experience to a new level when compared to the conventional naturally aspirated engines.

How Does Ford EcoBoost® Work?

The Ford EcoBoost® engines use a combination of innovative automotive technology to accomplish a more powerful and efficient engine. Four key features include turbocharging, direct fuel injection, Twin Independent Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT), and reduced engine displacement.

Turbocharging – The EcoBoost® engines use a turbocharger to push more air into the combustion change, which allows more fuel to be burned at once and increases the amount of power produced.

Direct Injection – Fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber of each cylinder instead of being mixed with air first as it would be in a traditional port fuel engine. This allows for more precise control of the fuel injection timing and amount which leads to better fuel economy.

Ti-VCT – The timing of when the intake and exhaust valves open and close continuously adjusts while the engine is running, in order to maximize torque and power, while simultaneously minimizing fuel consumption.

Smaller Engine Displacement – Another aspect of Ford’s EcoBoost® engines that improves their fuel efficiency is their smaller engine displacement.
